Laser Hair Removal or Waxing: Which Is Right for You?
Laser hair removal reduces unwanted hair over a series of sessions, while waxing and threading remove hair for a few weeks at a time. Here’s how they compare at Ardan, so you can pick what fits your hair, your skin, and your schedule.
How do they compare?
| Laser hair removal | Waxing | Threading | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Pulses of light target the hair in the follicle | Warm or cool wax lifts hair from the root | A twisted thread lifts hair from the root |
| How long it lasts | For many people, results last for several months and sometimes years. Hair that grows back is often finer and lighter, and follow-up treatments may be needed | Results can last a few weeks or longer | Results typically last 4 to 5 weeks |
| Sessions | A series, usually about 4 to 6 weeks apart | One visit at a time | One visit at a time |
| Examples at Ardan | Lip $80, chin $80, face $160, neck $150 | Upper lip $20, chin $20, full face $60 | Brow $30, upper lip $20 |
| Best for | Longer-lasting reduction over a series of visits | Larger areas and quick visits | Small, precise areas such as brows |
Which is better for me?
Laser has traditionally suited light skin with dark hair best, but today it’s also an option for darker skin and some lighter hair. Your provider will check your skin and hair at your consultation, which is complimentary. Waxing and threading work on any hair color.
Can I wax between laser sessions?
No. Waxing and threading remove the hair root, which the laser needs to target. Ask your provider how to handle hair between sessions and how long to wait after your last wax or thread before you begin.
How should I prepare for laser hair removal?
- Don’t tan indoors or out, and skip sunless tanner.
- Stop waxing and threading before your series begins. Your provider will tell you how long to wait.
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.
- Wear loose clothing to your appointment.
- Tell your provider about a recent tan, cold sores, keloids, a tendency to scar, and any medicines, including isotretinoin.
- Your provider will review your health history with you at your consultation.
What are the side effects of laser hair removal?
The most common side effects are minor and usually last 1 to 3 days:
- Discomfort, with pulses that feel like warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin
- Redness, often like a mild sunburn
- Swelling
- Skin color changes in the treated area, which are usually temporary
- Rarely, blistering, cold sores, infection, scarring, or changes in skin texture
What should I know before waxing or threading?
Waxing can sting as the wax comes off, and skin may be red for a short while. Threading causes little irritation, so it’s an option for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Let hair grow to about 1/4 to 3/4 inch before your visit, and tell us if you use retinoids or take isotretinoin, because waxing may not be right for you. After waxing, use a cold pack for soreness, skip hot baths and showers, and wear loose clothing.
Which should I try first?
If you’d like longer-lasting results, book a complimentary laser consultation. If you want a quick, simple option, start with a wax or threading visit. Either way, we’ll help you choose.
